There are going to be times in your life when you feel like you took a huge step and these past few months have felt like that time for myself.
One of the biggest changes that I’ve made is that I stopped studying topics and I started studying people.
It does not seem like it would be a big deal but it has made all of the difference.
Understanding a topic is quite useful and this is what we have been taught all of our life throughout school:
Math: arithmetics, algebra, calculus…I want to list more but my mind can’t even comprehend the gangster sh*t like theoretical mathematics.
Science: earth science, biology, physics, chemistry, etc.
We very rarely get introduced to a person and their processing capabilities that allow for these fundamental topics to be discovered.
The geniuses of our time like John von Neumann and Richard Feynman who have respectively made huge contributions to math and physics.
The product of their work is amazing to study but wouldn’t the journey to the product also be worthwhile?
Everything from their upbringing and experiences to their philosophy and mental models.
We learn about the outcomes but we don’t learn about the process.
When you learn about topics, you’re learning about the outcome.
When you learn about people, you’re learning about the process.
This is not to say that you have to pick between the options since they are both on the table.
I’ve studied people in the past but I have not studied them to the depth that I have these past couple of months.
If you feel inspired by this post and are wondering who I’ve been studying, this is a non-exhaustive list at this time:
- Charlie Munger
- Warren Buffett
- Scott Galloway
- Robert Greene
- Sam Parr
- Andrew Wilkinson
- Richard Feynman
- Mohnish Pabrai
My current interests lie in entrepreneurship, physics, and human behavior.
Even doing a little bit of research on this list will level you up.
If you want to be a better thinker…start with Charlie and Warren.
